image resize gives blank screen new!

Everything works fine until the uploaded image is larger than image_x and then i get a blank screen and an empty image.

These are the additional parameters:
$handle->image_resize            = true;
$handle->image_ratio_y           = true;
$handle->image_x                 = 220;
$handle->file_overwrite = true;
$handle->file_auto_rename = false;
